Knowledge Booster Training Bytes – Interactive Short Locator (ISL) in the PVS LVS Debug Environment

20 May 2022 • 4 minute read

In this Knowledge Booster blog, we talk about Interactive Short Locator (ISL) and explore how to debug shorts in the LVS debug environment using ISL. We also introduce you to the videos and training materials that can help you understand and use this feature.

What are Shorts?

Shorts happen when two or more nets in the netlist are connected together incorrectly. In the LVS Debug Environment window, it is recommended to start debugging errors from the Shorts tab because shorts significantly affect results reported in other tabs like Extraction and Comparison.

Interactive Short Locator (ISL) is used by PVS LVS to debug shorts in the LVS or ERC Error Browsers. Check out the An Introduction to Interactive Short Locator (ISL) video.

How to Debug Shorts using ISL?

ISL employs the One-pass Short Isolation technique to display the paths that consist of shapes from the connected layers between the shorted labels.

It supports interactive navigation of the shapes along each shorts path found. ISL interactively places additional labels to reduce the path results. Interactive analysis of suspicious shape for short, and multithreading to reduce the runtime for shorts analysis, are other features of ISL.

Check out the How to Debug Shorts with Interactive Short Locator (ISL)? video.
