Virtuosity: Device-Level Routing for Advanced Nodes – Using Generate Trunks

12 Jul 2019 • 2 minute read

The next blogs in the Virtuoso Device-Level Routing blog series will enfold the story of how a trunk and a twig became a tree. This blog describes the Trunk Generation feature in detail – which is the founding piece that helps us to provide customized device-level routing solutions.

Designs are becoming more structured and row-based as we move from matured nodes to advanced nodes. Here is an example of the type of placed device-level designs that we are now seeing in advanced nodes.

The designers in Cadence’s own IP Group are already beating the drum for the new automatic Trunk Generation, Trunk-to-Trunk Mesh routing, and Tree route flow features as they have witnessed a significant reduction in overall routing time while using these features on larger types of designs. Mask layout designers can boost their productivity by learning how to automate the creation of interconnect with the use of new features like Trunk Generation.

In the Virtuoso platform, Trunk Generation offers a higher level of automation over Finish Trunk and helps you by automatically generating trunks in a customized approach. It offers incremental productivity improvement with automation over Pin-to-Trunk, while still providing all the customizable options in the Pin-to-Trunk flow.

Here is a video that illustrates how the trunks are automatically generated in the Pin-to-Trunk route flow. To view the detailed video, click the below image.

Stay tuned... the next blog in this series will describe how the new Trunk-to-Trunk Mesh routing can be customized.
