Virtuoso Video Diary: Record. Replay. Relax.

16 Oct 2019 • 2 minute read

Have you ever noticed how tiring it is to repeat yourself? It can actually be exhausting. But if you have a device that can save you hours of meaningless and mindless repetition, go ahead and delegate your repeated tasks to the device so you can get on with more interesting things.

In Abstract Generator, the library modeling tool of Virtuoso, a unique set of “Record and Replay Files” can help you eliminate unnecessary repetition while refining your work. It enables you to rerun any Abstract Generator session in batch mode, thus allowing you to automate things and save time.

When you use Abstract Generator, every operation you perform during a session is recorded in a .record file. That is, an abstract.record file is created for every Abstract Generator session. Once you have an abstract.record file from a previous run, it is only a matter of changing library and cell names and start using it as a replay file for the current session. To save your previous work and to avoid the abstract.record file from being overwritten, the abstract.record file is renamed as abstract.replay, and then it is replayed. This file allows you to create user-defined macros with a minimum of manual intervention and rerun any Abstract Generator session in batch mode in either GUI or non-GUI mode.

Feeling relaxed? You will find it even more gratifying when you actually start using it.

I am sure Abstract Generator will save you a lot of time with the advent of the record and replay files, so how about taking an extra tea break with your colleagues and discussing the recent development of machine learning technologies in the EDA industry?

To learn more about this feature, watch the Running Virtuoso Abstract Generator Using Replay File video series available on Cadence Support portal. Click the video link now or visit Cadence Support portal and search for this video series under Video Library.

Note: Abstract Generator does not support the Verify step (which is seen in the videos) in the IC6.1.8 and ICADVM18.1 releases. As a result, all the Verify-related menus have been removed from the standalone Abstract Generator interface.
