Can AI + EDA Really Fix IR Drop? Inside the Voltus InsightAI Training Course

5 Apr 2026 • 3 minute read

For decades, Electronic Design Automation (EDA) has been driven by deterministic algorithms, expert-crafted heuristics, and ever-growing compute power. But as chips scale and technologies shrink, traditional EDA approaches are hitting a complexity wall.

Enter Artificial Intelligence. AI helps designers navigate complexity, uncover hidden patterns, and accelerate signoff with confidence.

The  “Voltus InsightAI 25.1” is designed to help design engineers understand why traditional IR fixing struggles and how AI‑assisted, in‑design IR mitigation can dramatically shorten closure cycles while preserving PPA.

Why EDA Needs AI Now More Than Ever

Modern SoCs are fundamentally different from their predecessors:

  • Designs exceed 2 billion instances
  • Power grids span multiple voltage domains
  • 3D‑IC and chiplet-based architectures introduce system-level effects
  • Advanced nodes (7nm → 2nm) with tight signoff margins
  • Strong coupling between power, timing, signal integrity, and thermal effects

Why Power Integrity Is AI’s First Target

Power integrity sits at the intersection of massive data, complex interactions, and late-stage risk—exactly the kind of problem AI is best suited to tackle.

Power integrity (PI) is:

  • Highly multi-dimensional (space, time, voltage, activity, temperature)
  • Non-linear (small changes can trigger large failures)
  • Context-dependent (the same IR hotspot can have different root causes)
  • Late-stage painful (fixes often impact timing, area, and routing)

EDA tools already generate enormous volumes of data—IR drop maps, activity annotations, timing windows, parasitics, EM rules, package models. The bottleneck is no longer analysis but it is interpretation.

What Is Voltus InsightAI?

Voltus InsightAI is Cadence’s AI‑driven, in‑design power integrity solution that uses a generative AI model to predict, analyze, and fix IR drop issues early and incrementally within the Innovus digital implementation flow.

Key characteristics introduced in the course include:

  • A fast IR inferencing engine that enables rapid, incremental IR analysis
  • IR drop diagnostics that identify true root causes using aggressor–victim relationships
  • Multi‑method fixing that is timing‑ and DRC‑aware
  • Seamless integration with Innovus for pre‑route and post‑route fixing

The course emphasizes that Voltus InsightAI is an in‑design IR prevention and repair mechanism that dramatically improves productivity and predictability.

Training Content

The course walks through the full Voltus InsightAI flow, including:

  • Pre‑route RPG (Reinforce Power Grid)
  • IR‑Aware Placement (IRAP)
  • Post‑route RPG, PG metal fill, and IR‑ECO
  • Automated and timing‑aware fixing

Benefits of Voltus InsightAI

According to the training material, Voltus InsightAI delivers:

  • Early IR analysis during implementation
  • Greater than 2X productivity improvement
  • Significant reduction in IR violations
  • Faster IR closure with better PPA outcomes
  • Tight integration with Cadence digital tools
