Behavioural source expressions in ADE-XL IC614

I've been playing around with the behavioural source expressions in IC614 using mmsim710. I've instanced a few resistances whose values I change as a function of time, using the $time parameter. I prefer this method as opposed to creating a verilogA module since it requires less work and appeared to have simulated much faster. I've had no problems netlisting and simulating this circuit in ADE-L, but I'm having a slight problem doing this in ADE-XL. It seems that ADE-XL recognises the $time parameter as a variable called 'time' and then wants me assign a value to it before I can run the simulation. So assigning it a dummy value causes an error since spectre reserves the 'time' parameter. I've tried to make a dummy variable called 'myVar' and assign the value $time to it, but spectre does not like that either. Are there any suggestions on a possible workaround apart from using verilogA?
