Running Cadence IC on VMware?

My IT department is very enthusastic about putting everything on VMware.  They say that this will make their job much easier.

I would like to know if you, anyone, or your company has tried running Cadence IC, ADE, or Virtuososo (any version) on VMware and how it worked out for you.

    Hi John

Apart from the license server which does not work no a virtual machine, Cadence tools (e.g. Virtuoso, Encounter, etc) has no problem operating on vmware. I am using IC615-500-9 on VMware workstation 6.0.2.

    Best regards

    Hi John,

In addition to what Quek said, I don't think that VMware is officially supported.  However, having said this, if the virtual machine is a supported OS (e.g. RedHat 5.3, say, or SuSE 10 etc.) for the releases of tools that you are using, you should be successful.  The tricky thing is the licensing.  I believe that you can run the licenses directly on the base system and allow the VMware sessions to access the licenses.  It is not supported to actually serve licenses from a virtual machine though.

    Hope this helps!

    Lawrence.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.

I have heard from some people that running Cadence on VMware caused their applications to sometimes hang or crash.

And in general there was about a 20% overall decrease in performance.

However, I am still finding out more.

    Thanks,

    John

    Hi John

I think it is extremely hard to quantify "performance" because it is denpendent on specific virtual operating systems and also on the setup. I have been using vmware workstation for 7 years and so far everything works great. : )
