ELC problem: simulation failed with the status 512

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to use ELC to characterize a very simple NAND gate using Spectre and UMC 130nm technology. For some reason the simulations fail as:

               Simulation Summary
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
-------------+-------------+----------+--------------+-----------
-------------+-------------+----------+------------+-----------+------------
   DESIGN    |   PROCESS   |   #ID    |   STAGE    |  STATUS   |    IPDB
-------------+-------------+----------+------------+-----------+------------
NANDSIZED      typical       D0000     SIMULATE     FAIL        std
NANDSIZED      typical       D0001     SIMULATE     FAIL        std
NANDSIZED      typical       D0002     SIMULATE     FAIL        std
NANDSIZED      typical       D0003     SIMULATE     FAIL        std
NANDSIZED      typical       D0004     SIMULATE     FAIL        std
NANDSIZED      typical       D0005     SIMULATE     FAIL        std
NANDSIZED      typical       D0006     SIMULATE     FAIL        std
NANDSIZED      typical       D0007     SIMULATE     FAIL        std
-------------+-------------+----------+------------+----------

 When I see the log_dir, I get:

Using command spectre
Simulation failed with the status 512
Releasing lock

Looking at the work_dir and the .lis files, it seems to have a problem with the model files. Also I get this funny error at the end too:

Error found by spectre during circuit read-in.
    "typical_D0000_tr.sp" 46: Unknown dot word `.measure'.
    "typical_D0000_tr.sp" 47: Unknown dot word `.measure'.

It looks like Spectre tries to run an Hspice netlist. I've already specified Spectre as my simulator in the elccfg file. Can anyone help me please?

Thanks,

Mahmoud

    Mahmoud,

Judging by the error, you appear to be using a really old version of spectre (probably from IC5141). This uses the "old" front end (which was replaced by a newer front end that natively reads SPICE syntax in MMSIM60 which was released in 2004). So please ensure that you have spectre from a newer release (e.g. MMSIM11.1 or MMSIM12.1)

    Regards,

    Andrew.

    Thanks a lot Andrew,

Yes that was the problem. So I guess there are 2 solutions: either use an updated version of Spectre or switch to Hspice. I chose the second option and the .lib files are now generated.

    Regards,

    Mahmoud
