From spectremdl to ultrasim : any cadence solution ?

Hello !!

I have a simulation database for spectremdl (CADENCE) it means I have all the mandatory files to execute :

spectremdl -tab -batch deck.mdl -design deck.scs

However, my aim is to use ultrasim (CADENCE). But, because the spectremdl strategy is done in such a way that all the measurements are in the deck.mdl file, i cannot launch ultrasim straight like this :

ultrasim deck.scs

Indeed, i would not have any output measurements.

So, except doing some scripting from my side, is there a Cadence solution to be able to execute ultrasim from a "spectremdl database" ?

 Thanks a lot !

P.

My tools version :

MMSIM10_11/tools/bin/spectremdl (Version 10.1.1.181.isr12 64bit -- 26 Jul 2011)

MMSIM10_11/tools/bin/ultrasim (Version 10.1.1.181.isr12  64bit 07/27/2011 02:55 (usimamd64-14))

Actually, I don't launch the spectremdl tool because it will take too much time to make the simulation of my netlist, that's why I need to launch ultrasim.

Plus, i am in the case of a memory instance characterization, so it means I have many conditions to characterize (this would lead to the scripting I was talking about).

Rather than using Ultrasim, you could use APS (maybe a more recent MMSIM version would be good too, since there have been 3 major versions since the one you're using)?

    spectremdl +ams -tab -batch deck.mdl -design deck.scs

Or potentially you could run ultrasim and then use the "mdl" command to run the MDL script post-simulation (depends if it is just for measurement or it controls the simulation). The mdl command runs on a result directory rather than running a simulation.

Spectre MDL isn't supported directly with Ultrasim though.

    Regards,

    Andrew.

If this is for characterizing memories, you might want to contact Cadence about seeing whether you could use XPS (our newer FastSPICE solution), which will work with MDL (and should be considerably faster than UltraSim).

Thanks Andrew for your reply, however, the characterization tool I am using, is not supporting well the spectre (and so ultrasim) simulators.

    Have a nice day !

That's rather confusing since you said you wanted to run spectremdl. That will only work with simulators that support MDL - i.e. spectre, APS and XPS. So if your "characterization tool is not supporting well spectre", I'm not sure what you were actually asking.

    Oh well,

    Andrew.

    Andrew,

actually, I was expecting the characterization tool works with spectre (spectremdl actually), but when using it, it is not the case. It bugs, after the simulation is done with the results extraction and integration in the flow. So I had to move to a plan B.

But i can still do some standalone simulation out-of-the-flow.
