im using candene virtuoso. Is it possible to define my own input pattern (e.g 101100011) instead of using "vsource" as an input to inverter.. i need to estimate  power for different input patterns of my own choice.plz give suggestion how can i do it only using virtuoso. !!!

Thanks..!!

Yes. Set the vsource type to "bit" or use vbit from analogLib.

In the Virtuoso® Spectre® Circuit Simulator and Accelerated Parallel Simulator RF Analysis User Guide, Chapter 8, there is a description of how to use the bit source with the port.  The fields for the port and vsource are very similar (if not identical in many cases).  You can use that as a guideline.

    best regards,

    Tawna

It might help if you read the forum guidelines. In particular the bits about the tool versions you're using and also about avoiding instant messaging short hand. As an Englishman I find "u plz" rather jarring...

The bit source is pretty simple. "spectre -h vsource" from the UNIX command line will also tell you about the pattern fields for a bit source, but if you're using too old a version this will not be very helpful as it may not be there at all...

    Andrew.

I am simulating design in cadence virtuoso 6.1.5 with spectre. i am familiar with bit source but i have never used it before. im also a beginner so i want to know how to set my input pattern using it and the information regarding entries (pattern parameter rptstart, rpttimes) ? should i need to specify period of waveform as well?

    1. What version of spectre are you using?  Typing the command in an xterm at the unix prompt:

    unix> spectre -W

    will give that information.

    2. Look at the contents of spectre help:

    unix> spectre -h vsource

    --or--

The SpectreRF User Guide has the information that you need.  You should be able to access it by calling up the documentation:

    unix> cdnshelp

Alternately you can look at the pdf document with acroread, type in an xterm

    unix> which spectre

This will return the path to spectre:

    unix>  /grid/cds/software/MMSIM131ISR/tools.lnx86/bin/spectre

Now you know where your spectre software hierarchy is located, cd to

    unix> cd  /grid/cds/software/MMSIM131ISR/doc/spectreRF

This is the location of the documentation in the hierarchy (if you cannot find it installed on your machine)

Open the SpectreRF documentation with acroread:

    unix> acroread spectreRF.pdf

If you are using MMSIM12.1-13.1, the information is in Chapter 8: AnalogLib Components Used in RF Simulation of the SpectreRF User Guide.   Look for port.  Many of the properties on port are the same as those in vsource and isource.

There's no substitution for opening a schematic, putting in the source, running simulations, and looking at what the various options do, especially if you are a new user.   (But the documentation is pretty good.)

    best regards,

    Tawna
