Cannot access non-graphical X server

I am trying to run 'virutoso -nograph' and I get the following errors:

Code:

Trying another display...
*WARNING* Could not open display hostname:89. If no X server is running for this display,
*WARNING* remove the file /tmp/.X11-unix/X89: owner user, last modified Mon Nov 3 10:14:00 2014

*WARNING* Giving up after trying 10 displays.
*WARNING* Unable to connect to a non-graphical X Window Display server.
*WARNING* Try using the -vncTenbase option or the CDS_XVNC_TENBASE environment variable to specify a different set of 10 displays.

The irony of this is that I can start virtuoso fine when I don't ask for -nograph mode (when I ask it not to use the X server, it fails saying it cannot find the xserver, otherwise it works without problems).

I have tried searching with Google: no luck finding anything on this error message from Cadence or on non-graphical X servers in general.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get virtuoso talking to the 'non-graphical X Window Display server', whatever that is?

August

(I originally posted this on the designers-guide.org forum, but someone suggested this might be a better forum, so I re-posted it here. If I get a good answer here I will share it on the designers-guide.org forum as well)

    Hi August,

Try taking a look at Solution Article 11684138

by default the VNC server that is used to 'receive' the graphics for a -nograph session use ports between 80 - 89 inclusive.  If these are all in use then you will get the warnings shown above.  Using the CDS_XVNC_TENBASE variable you can change the default range for where the VNC session numbers fall within; it would be set to a number from 1-9 - if set to, say, 2, then the VNC sessions would range from 20-29.

Hopefully I'm not mangling the information, there is a little more complexity, but hopefully this explains the basic operation.  It could be that there really are too many VNC sessions already running, but look at the above first.

    Hope it helps,

    Lawrence.

Lawrence, thank you for your reply.

The article describes how to change which 'ports' are used if the default ports are currently in use. Unfortunately, that is not my problem. It is not that I have run out of them, its that I cannot seem to connect to them once they are created.

In exploring this problem here is what I have discovered. Apparently the use of X11 is wired into virtuoso, but sometime you really don't want it to pop up windows, so Cadence added -nograph mode. However, apparently the use of X11 is so ingrained, it is difficult to turn off, so rather than turning it off, they simply start a vncserver session and direct the graphical output of virtuoso to that. So the ports are not ports per se, they are display numbers. There are ports associated with these displays, they are 5900+display number.

When I run 'virtuoso -nograph' a vnc session does start up, but virtuoso cannot connect to it, so it hangs for a while while it starts up a total of 10 vnc sessions before it finally gives up.

What I need to know, how can I fix the fact that Virtuoso cannot connect to the vnc session that it itself started. I did try starting my own vncserver and was able to connect to it, so that eliminates some possible systemic issues. I don't know what else to try.
