Cadence Virtuoso IC6.1.5 hanging on start

When I start virtuoso& on a new install, it hangs and does nothing for 10 min, and then the CDS.log window appears and is blank for multiple hours and thereafter. I installed Cadence on fresh RHEL 5 OS on a machine behind static private IP with http proxy (license server is on campus so proxy shouldn’t be issue, and the way I linked to license from bash profile worked before previously).

Description of issue (3 part issue, each part may or may not be independent):
*1.) typing “virtuoso&” at command line gives the “Virtuoso Design Environment” logo screen, but nothing happens(it hangs) for 10 minutes, and then the “Log: /hom/mnp/CDS.log” window finally appears, but is blank with a busy sign when the mouse is over it. Leaving it to run overnight does not change the state this is in. Screenshot 1 attached shows the final state of my problem.
*2.) Doing sysConfCheck shows one remaining package “compat-readline434.3” which is not installed. I googled for yum install compat-readline434.3 but yum did not recognize any compat-readline permutation, yum install readline showed “package readline-5.1-3.el5.x86_64 and .i386” already installed.  I manually rpm’d the closest thing I could find (http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/centos/5.11/x86_64/CentOS/compat-readline43-4.3-3.x86_64.html ), and rpm’ed it with results as shown in figure1 attached.  This still resulted in sysConfCheck showing “compat-readline434.3” not installed.
*3.) doing sysConfCheck  shows “xdpyinfo: unable to open display “mnp-circuits.ucsd.edu:0.0”., and takes several minutes to repeat that xdpyinfo unable to open display line before going to to show the rest of the packages.  I googled to resolve this, and tried adding “export DISPLAY:= mnp-circuits.ucsd.edu:0.0” to the bash, but it did not change anything. I am currently at a loss as to what to do next for this, but have ignored it, since sysConfCheck continues on after some time, and I need to resolve the missing packages too.

So a first question would be, how can I properly put the compat-readline434.3 in place? I have asked this in the Cadence forums but haven’t gotten an answer yet. The next question would be does “xdpyinfo: unable to open display “mnp-circuits.ucsd.edu:0.0” issue during sysConfCheck have anything to do with Virtuoso freezing and not loading? Where can I check for logs that may help to debug this haning? (CDS.log) just shows start time and machine info, nothing on freezing or error.)

Description of my Setup:
-Cadence had been working before this reinstallation, with download files and packages for IC6.1.5 and MMSIM in a location, and installed files in another location.   I started with freshly reinstalled and updated RHEL 5, this time on a private static IP, and access to outside campus done through a proxy (an aside: I have tried putting export http_proxy=”etcetc” in the bash script but it does not help or change the problem, anyways I thought the proxy is more of a license issue, which shouldn’t be an issue bc the license is on acms server on campus, also I know what a license error looks like from before and this is not that).
- I use installscape to install IC6.1.5 and MMSIM from the existed previous download packages with the install from Media option in installscape, and then I go through the configuration. This is successful.
- I install dependences and libraries (elfutils, libxp) that this Cadence 6.1 on RHEL5 tutorial suggested(ece-research.unm.edu/.../installing_cadence.pdf).
-I setup my .bash_profile and make sure that the cadence and spectre directory paths are set correctly(also compared whats in current .bash_profile to the working bash profile prior to reinstalling to make sure the structure was the same).
-then I run virtuoso&, and get the error.
-next I run sysConfCheck and get the second issue “xdpyinfo: unable to open display “mnp-circuits.ucsd.edu:0.0”, I ignore this and let it take around 8 minutes to move on and show me what I’m missing. I install all missing items except for the issue with “compat-readline434.3” not installed.
- I go back and try running virtuoso&, everytime I still get the issue described in 1.)

I am at a loss for what to do besides asking for help and so I was hoping for some guidance. Thanks for any and all help.

I doubt if the missing package is the problem - I think you can get away without that. Most likely it's something to do with your /etc/hosts file (at a wild guess). What do you have in your /etc/hosts file? Usually this kind of problem is an issue with the loopback address (127.0.0.1) entry.

    Regards,

    Andrew.

Thanks so much for the response Andrew. I see, I reinstalled the OS and Cadence after giving up on the issue, and have not had any problems.
