What is a display packet

Hello,

I am doing some layout work on a new technology with a very limited pdk support, so I have some basic questions about how the technology file and display.drf file are related. My understanding is that the layers are defined in the tech file and how the layers show up is defined in display.drf. In my case, the display.drf only has display packets defined and no display layers defined. So when I try to change the display properties in display resource manager window, it changes the color/pattern of all the layers in the packet.

Can someone point me to a guide on what a display packet means, and what its functionality is. Is there any way I can disable the packets and only work with changing individual layer display properties.

This is covered in the Virtuoso® Technology Data User Guide (which you can find in cdnshelp, which you can also launch via the Help menus in Virtuoso). Search for "Display Resource File Development" to find it.

Or you can look in the PDF <ICinstDir>/doc/techfileuser/techfileuser.pdf (chapter 3 in current versions).

The general principle is that a packet in the display.drf describes the line style, fill style, fill and line colours, and then in the technology file in the techDisplays section, it links each layer-purpose with the name of the packet used to display that layer. You can change the definition of the packet, and when you do so all layer-purposes that are using that packet will be changed. If you need to separate out the display of different layer-purpose pairs, you need to assign a unique packet in the tech file.

Anyway, hopefully the manuals will fill you in on what you need to know.

    Kind Regards,

    Andrew.
