Cadence and Windows

Hello,

It is a simple question but I didn't find a clear answer.

Why a lot of Cadence tools are not available on Windows? It is a question of performances? Stability? Scripting possibilities?

Best regards,

Emmanuel

    Emmanuel,

It's a mixture of history, market demand, and the fact that Windows is not really a great operating system for high performance computing. The history is that many of the tools started life on Unix (e.g. SunOS, HPUX, AIX) with Unix-based user interfaces, and it's a non-trivial effort to port those to Windows. There was quite a push for Windows maybe 15 years ago, and things started moving towards supporting Windows as an OS for some of the tools. Then Linux came along as a free (or almost free) alternative which gave access to (relatively) cheap PC hardware with a familiar UNIX environment and that really was the nail in the coffin for the push for Windows.

Some of the tools (mainly in the PCB arena) are supported on Windows and have been for many years - again, this is largely market driven.

    Regards,

    Andrew.
