MMSIM Issue with IC5141

Bilal Porto
Bilal Porto over 8 years ago

I was using IC5141 on CentOS 64bit with MMSIM 12. The problem was that mmsim was defined prior to IC tools. my script looked something like following :

setenv MMSIM_12_11        ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/mmsim
set path=(    \
    $MMSIM_12_11/bin\
    ${path}\
    )
set path=(    \
    $MMSIM_12_11/tools/bin\
    ${path}\
    )

# Set environmental variables and paths for IC_5.1.41HF151 and tools
set path = (~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/mmsim/bin $path)
setenv  CDS_ROOT                ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/ic_5.1
setenv     CDS_INST_DIR        ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/ic_5.1            # Basic Cadence (i.e. IC tools)
setenv     CDSDIR             ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/ic_5.1            # IC tools (composer, virtuoso, etc.)
setenv     CDS_INSTALL_DIR     ${CDS_INST_DIR}/tools/dfII
setenv     CDSHOME         $CDS_INST_DIR
setenv     EDI               ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/edi9.12            # SOC Encounter place and route
#setenv IUS               $base_dir/IUS-F08                    # Verilog simulators
setenv     ETS               ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/ets9_1            # Encounter Library Characterizer, Timing
setenv     ET               ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/ets9_1            # Encounter Test system
setenv     RC                ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/RC             # RTL Compiler synthesis

set path=(    \
    $CDS_ROOT\
    $CDS_ROOT/tools/spectre/bin\
    $CDS_INST_DIR/bin\
    $CDS_INST_DIR/tools/bin\
    $CDS_INST_DIR/tools/dfII/bin\
    $EDI/bin\
    $ETS/bin\
    $ET/tools.lnx86/bin\
    $RC/bin\
    ${path}\
    )

It apparently was working fine but when i checked with command spectre -W, it showed sub-version  5.10.41.121508 .

Now if i define MMSIM path after IC tools, i get in terminal for spectre version sub-version  12.1.1.096.isr12

but in CIW, it is giving error.

I understand that this problem is coming from mmsim/bin/cds_root. but cannot understand why. Please help me with it.

Your use of "before" and "after" is a bit counter to the usual way of describing this (which is whether the path to MMSIM is before or after the path to IC in the $path variable). Because you're prepending paths in the two updates to the $path variable, that's why your terminology was a bit back to front. Anyway, the key is that with IC5141 you really need to have the MMSIM path before the IC path in the $path variable, which is what your second update did.

Unfortunately there was no image in the post above, so I can't see the error. Can you just paste the text of the CIW error rather than posting an image?

    Regards,

    Andrew.

Thanks Andrew for your reply. Once i run the scripts,it loads CIW but there error reads:
"cds_root: the tool is not available on lnx86 platform. unable to find cadence installation"
I am not able to open library editor. but i can open my cell views and things but cannot run simulations.

I've not seen this behaviour - but then again you have some unnecessary paths in your $path. All you should need is:

    MMSIM/bin
    IC/tools/bin
    IC/tools/dfII/bin

you have numerous others which shouldn't be needed. Perhaps you can also post the output of:

    ls ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/mmsim

I tried reproducing it on an RHEL6 machine (with similar versions) and all worked OK for me. You may be best advised to contact customer support so that we can have a webex with you to take a look - doing this via the forums is hard as it has a slow round trip time!

    Regards,

    Andrew.

I also want to clarify that you have a very good reason for running these really old versions of our tools. Otherwise, you will have much better luck with newer versions.

Thanks Andrew for your time. Here is the output of mmsim folder:
    [NASA@I02CP2201@fe ~/projects]$ ls ~cdsmgr/cad/tools/cadence/mmsim/
    bin install share
    data installData tools
    doc installer_vars.properties tools.lnx86
    Hotfix_MMSIM12.11.096_lnx86.sdp iscape_logs
    ic_index.sdx oa_v22.43.015
I am now taking the back up and planning to reinstall. if you find something in the mean time, it would be great.

yes my only fear is change. I am at a very critical stage of my chip and don't want to risk it with a newer version with which i do not have much experience.

Although I'm not sure why you're worrying about changing version when the version you have isn't actually working for some reason!

    Andrew.

what i meant is that iC6 looks a bit different. U know i feel a bit uncomfortable with tabs misplaced or some extra tabs which i don't know the meaning. but let me ask you one favour. which parasitic tool is good for extracting self inductance and mutual inductance i.e Assura QRC or Calibre. can you please provide a short tutorial in setting up calibre and assura specifically for indutance. I found alot of help for capacitance and resistance. but still i am not clear for inductance. if this has already been discussed in another thread, please provide the link. Thanks

QRC can extract RLCK and is very capable in that area. Also, "U" is spelt "you" (there's no tax on characters in the forums - see the end of the forum guidelines - this is something that irritates me and makes it less likely that I'll respond, for future reference...)

If you want to extract L and K in QRC, simply pick that extraction mode on the form (e.g. RLC or RLCK). I can't provide you a tutorial for Calibre (it's not a Cadence tool - it's from Mentor Graphics) and the documentation for QRC should really be sufficient here

    Regards,

    Andrew.
