Running multiple using ADE L, ADE XL, (not at the same time)

Dear all,

I've been using ADE to run simulation for a long time. However, I found that when I have multiple ADE instances opened to run multiple simulations, for example, do some basic DC analysis on a small circuit, while waiting for a big long transient simulation to finish. When I open up the waveform viewer, cadence gets confused and it doesn't display the waveform properly, this gets even more annoying  and frustrating when you have circuits nodes with the same name, and etc...

ADE XL does allow us to run multiple simulation at the same time, but we have prepared all the test setup before we hit the start button, which doesn't help my usage scenario. I wish to start another new simulation while the other simulation is already running.

I used to able to do that with HSPICE, where you have all your netlist, .log, waveform files in one folder. If you want to see the waveform, just open the waveform file with the viewer. However, with cadence, we have .dat file, whose file size indicates that this is the waveform file, but you can't open this up using the viewer (viva).

Please help us, other people in my lab seem to have the same issue.

Thank you very much,

Best Regards,

Menghan

Which version are you using? Which simulator?

In general, this should work OK, and if it doesn't, it's a bug. Occasionally I have seen problems in the past and then when I do, I report them to R&D to get fixed.

The workaround (when something is not behaving correctly and picking up the results from the wrong session) is to do Results->Select to force that ADE session to pick up the current set.

If you're talking about .dat files too, that suggests you are using spectre or AMS as the simulator, and have the output format set to "sst2" (on Outputs->Save All). You may be better off using PSF XL (which is the default nowadays).

    Andrew.

    Hi Andrew,

We are using IC616 MMSIM 141. Actually, even for my colleague who is long time cadence user, he said that he had that problem all the time. So, I don't think it is a version specific problem.

Also, could you please recommend a version that is in your opinion the most "bug-free". I'll just ask the IT support from the lab to install that one.

    Thank you

    Menghan,

In general, the latest hotfix should be the most bug-free unless there's a known problem we've introduced. So I'd say IC617 ISR13 (at this time).

As for the multiple session problem - if you're having issues with that, you should contact customer support via your normal channel to report the scenarios where they occur.

    Andrew.
