Computer specifications for Cadence Virtuoso

I am going to buy a new PC for running Cadence Virtuoso. The simulations that I will be working with would be DC, AC, PSS, Noise, and Transient (Specifically because I might need to run these in ADEXL to have Monte Carlo outcomes). The Cadence version I am currently using is IC6.1.6-64b.500.6.

Evidently, the higher spec, the better! However, I am trying to understand which part should I invest more, given the fact that I like to have parallel processing to maximize the speed. I was wondering if I should have more # CPU cores and less RAM or vice versa. I would like to thank you for your valuable comments!

That’s very hard to answer in general terms because it will depend on the sizes of the circuits, the number of simulations you want to run in parallel and the licenses you have available to support multi-threading. It also depends on which simulator you’re using (you didn’t say, nor did you mention the simulator version).

It would be best to ask this via your account team or customer support and then we can uncover your requirements in more detail.

Not sure why you need to run such an old version - IC616 is long past end of support (IC617 came out three years ago and even IC618 came out this week - you’re using an old hotfix of IC616 so that’s even older).

    Regards,

    Andrew

Thank you for your answer. I am going to talk to computer people here in school to shoot for an update and I am also going to talk to customer support. Before that, can you please let me know what do you mean by simulator? Is it ADEX or ADEXL or you are referring to PVS/Calibre/Assura? Also, can you please help me with the version of the simulator, I do not know where can I understand these versions. Thank you for your valuable support!

I mean something like Spectre, AMS Designer, HSPICE - whichever circuit simulator you're using within ADE. ADE is the Analog Design Environment which sets up and controls a particular simulator. PVS, Calibre and Assura are not simulators - they are physical verification tools used for performing Design Rule Checks and Layout Versus Schematic checks.

    Regards,

    Andrew.
