Virtuoso Chip Assembly Router in 6.1.8

Hello,

I am having issues with starting up VCAR in 6.1.8 as mentioned. I was wondering whether this feature has been changed in this IC release. When I was using 6.1.6 the VCAR GUI window used to startup when launching it through layout XL like its shown below.

Now when I try to launch it through Layout XL, I am getting the following error in the CIW when I press ok in VCAR Startup setup window.

 # Exiting because of license failure

Does this mean that during the upgrade to 6.1.8 from 6.1.6, a necessary license file was missed? Does the feature require separate licensing?

I am also able to do some Automatic routing of my nets from the Route pulldown menu in the Layout L toolbar. How is this feature different from VCAR?Is the only difference here that VCAR requires a rules file?

This was always a separately licensed feature - either via Layout GXL tokens or via the standalone Virtuoso Chip Assembly Router product. So you would need to check what licenses you have.

I'm not sure what you're referring to with the "Route pulldown menu in the Layout L toolbar". I don't believe there is a Route "menu" in the Layout L toolbar. You'd need to be in Layout XL to access this, and then it's going to be the VSR (Virtuoso Space-Based Router) which is a newer router (also requires a license) - it's different technology than VCAR.

    Regards,

    Andrew

    Hello Andrew,

Thanks for the reply and clarifications. Yes I should have typed Layout XL instead of Layout L.

I am able to run VSR from the Route menu and setup connections between instances. I believe since it does produce a layout quickly , our university does have the license for it. Activating the Chip Assembly Router by going to Windows > Toolbars and then trying to run brings about the licensing error in the CIW I talked about in the opening post. I will ask our Tech Liason to check if our license covers it.
