Is CDL netlist *.PININFO pin1:O pin2:I pin3:IO property a syntax requirement?

Trying to understand what tools read the direction of pins in the CDL netlist.

Is this syntax a requirement? Which tools will give out errors when reading the CDL without the directions?

Where can i find "Syntax manual" sort of guide for CDL format?

CDL is documented in several places, but it's certainly in the PVS Developers Guide in a chapter called Physical Verification System and CDL. It's not a requirement, and I don't believe it's checked by physical verification tools as far as I know. It's been supported for a very long time (CDL originated with Dracula), but I don't recall Dracula ever checking pin direction information either - given that the direction couldn't be identified from the layout.

It is however used if you import a CDL netlist using File->Import->SPICE in Virtuoso to know which direction the resulting pins should be. SPICE itself doesn't have pin direction information, so this pragma is useful in that case.

    Regards,

    Andrew.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the info. Where can I find the PVS Guide? Which EDA tool packages does it come with?

You'd find it in the PVS19.1 stream for example. Or on Cadence Online Support here

    Andrew.
