Difference between "Extract Layout" and "Update" in Cadence Virtuoso Layout tools

Hello,

I would like to know the difference between the "Extract Layout" and "Update" in Cadence Virtuoso Layout tools.

It looks for me that "Extract Layout"  also do the update to the net and do the same job of "Update"

Thank you

Regards

    Hello,

"Extract Layout" would propagate the physical connectivity from pins to shapes and check for opens and shorts.

"Update Layout" would update the layout according to the schematic. So touching the logical connectivity updating the layout components/parameters but not doing the physical connectivity check.

The commands are doing different things.

If you need to check for shorts and opens please use "Extract Layout", if you want to update your layout according to the schematic changes pleas use "Update Layout".

    Thanks,

    Alex

Thank you Alex for your reply

but also in the extract layout I can run the "Check against Source", and the CAS window will open to show if there is unmatched component and can update it from there as well

There are two separate commands "Extract Layout" and "Check Against Source".

The CAS interface would open when you click on the menu or on the icon. In this interface you would define the type of checks you want to run.

The checker is going to compare the layout and the schematic according to the checks you have selected.

The "Extract Layout " would also open a form in which you can choose the hierarchy depth or defining some options and when you run it, it will check the connectivity in the layout and not check anything related to the schematic.

    Thanks,

    Alex
