The so called "Virtuoso Layout Suite EXL"

I would like to ask about the Electromagnetic Solver, like the one shown in the picture. Is there a way for me to switch to the so-called Electromagnetic Solver Assistant like the one shown in the picture on EDA? The picture source website says that you need to switch to Virtuoso Layout Suite EXL first, and then select Electromagnetic from the workspace column to pop up the Electromagnetic Solver Assistant window, but I don’t even know how to call Virtuoso Layout Suite EXL (I only see Virtuoso Layout on EDA Suite L)

  • My guess is that you're using IC6.1.8. EXL only exists in ICADVM20.1 and IC23.1. You'd access it from the Launch menu in the layout editor.

    Yes! Yes! The Virtuoso Layout Suite L on my EDA is the version IC6.1.8.! And I search help for the EXL related, it only tells me ICADVM20.1 EXL, but for the further operations like how to switch to the so called Virtuoso Layout Suite EXL , it does not refer. So I'm just curious about if it can directly switch from Virtuoso Layout Suite L to Virtuoso Layout Suite EXL

    You can if you're running ICADVM20.1 or IC23.1. However, since in these releases there is no Virtuoso Layout Suite L, you'd be at least using Virtuoso Layout Suite XL.

    Excuse me, so what you mean is the ICADVM20.1 has only Virtuoso Layout Suite EXL, and the IC6.1.8 does not have Virtuoso Layout Suite EXL, right? If that's it, can the Virtuoso Layout Suite L switch to the Virtuoso Layout Suite XL in IC6.1.8? If it can, does that mean I can use the EXL by switching to XL?

    Not quite. Let me try again. There are various tiers of Virtuoso Layout Suite available, and these have been added to in the "advanced methodology" release, and then the latest Virtuoso Studio IC23.1 release (IC23.1 has combined the old "mature node" and "advanced node/methodologies" parallel release streams):

    Tier Releases
    VLS L IC6.1.8
    VLS XL IC6.1.8, ICADVM20.1, IC23.1
    VLS EAD IC6.1.8
    VLS EXL (superset of EAD) ICADVM20.1, IC23.1
    VLS MXL IC23.1

    You can switch to VLS XL in IC6.1.8 but you still won't have the electromagnetic assistant, because you'd have to switch to VLS EXL and that doesn't exist in IC6.1.8 - it's only in the ICADVM20.1 and IC23.1 streams.

    ICADVM20.1 doesn't only have EXL (it has XL too), but you're right that EXL isn't available in IC6.1.8.

    Yes, you can do that. In the later releases, it will open up in VLS XL anyway.

    No. You have to switch to EXL, and for that you have to be using a release that contains VLS EXL.

    Thanks, I get it. So, is there any way I can change to the ICADVM20.1? The help in my EDA do refer this so I think maybe in my EDA I can reach to this release

    The release should be available, but whether you have the license to access VLS EXL is another matter, or whether it's installed or not, I don't know. I am not sure what you mean by "The help in my EDA do refer this". You should contact whoever is the administrator for your Cadence software installations and licenses.
