How to have slots avoid vias in Metal Density Toolbar

Hello all, I am using the slotting feature inside the Metal Density Toolbar in Virtuoso EXL. I need the slots to avoid vias, so I deselect the "Slot Via: option under slotting style on the options form. 

However, it still generates slots in a metal shape overlapping with vias in an adjacent layer. 

How do I get it to recognize the already placed vias? An adjacent post mentioned defining a slot to via min distance in the tech file, but I am unsure how to exactly do that.
