Creating a magic ruler

Hi All!!! 1. i have always found it tedious to draw a ruler to double check layout parameters such as diff overlap past poly, when doing testchip layout. i want to design a code where when i run my cursor over or close to a side of an object (at the same level or at a lower hierarchy), the side gets highlighted. 2. after clicking, the coordinates of the side gets selected and when i do the same to a side of another object, a ruler is drawn from the first side to the second automatically. 3. this eliminates the need to zoom in and drag and draw a ruler. 4. i have used the gravity option, but i find it insufficient. please your advise and codes are most welcome, i am looking into dbgettrueoverlaps and other related skill functions. adhil

You probably just need to change the Gravity Depth to greater than 0 (e.g. 1 or more) to be able to snap to edges down the hierarchy.

I still don't quite understand why you can't use the standard "smart ruler" capability that's in IC614 and later (unless you're using and older release - you didn't say). This does everything you want and also highlights visually the edge that will be snapped to. Maybe I've missed something?

    Regards,

    Andrew.

Hi Andrew, I just wanted to create a ruler at particular distance(Like a GUI to pop up to ask from the point of cursor to what distance you need to create a ruler and by entering the number in GUI it should create a ruler to that distance) for that I have used dbCreateRuler() function but its not working properly as I expected.

It might help if you shared the code that you've written because without that it's rather hard to know what you've done wrong.

BTW, appending on the end of any 8 year old thread is thoroughly against the forum guidelines (please read these).

    Andrew.
