Multiprocessor ADE Option

 Hi everyone,

after installing a Cadence IC on a DELL workstation (2xQuad CPUs), I have noticed, while simulating a circuit with ADE L, that  not all of the CPUs are in use. Do I need additional software, or license feature to fix hardware resource usage? What might be a potential cause?

 Thanks in advance!

You're going to have to be more specific. Which version of Virtuoso are you using (IC5.1.41 or IC6.1.3)? Which version of Spectre are you using (ancient ships-with-IC5.1.41 or more current MMSIM 6.2, 7.0 or 7.1)? What sort of Spectre licenses do you have access to (MMSIM tokens or Spectre-only) and how many? Also, talk to your AE. They can fill you in on all the gory details. Andrew.

i need to know if the performance problem is caused by Cadence software (lack of apprioprate package, license).

    Kind Regards,

    peter.

You're going to have to look at the output of 'lmstat -a -c 5280@' to see what count of Spectre and/or 'Virtuoso_Multi_mode_Simulation' licenses you have. One quick way to see if your licenses are current enough for multi-threaded sims: open up ADE L and see if the 'Setup - Turbo/Parasitic Reduction' menu option is accessible. If it is then you have the licenses; open it up and click the 'Turbo' switch. Check your 'spectre.out' log files for phrases like 'number of threads used' to see what's being used if you don't go with the default 'Auto' number of threads. Also note, you probably won't see one spectre process per thread. You should see >100% numbers show up in 'top'. Hope this helps! Andrew.

Sorry about the formatting. This forum doesn't like return characters as entered via Safari on Mac OS X. I'm told they're looking into it... A.

i noticed a message in my output log saying that multithreading won't be enabled because i have less than 256 bsim4 instances in my schematic. maybe you're getting the same message?

Thank you for your replies. I think I have found the answer to all the bothering questions. Namely, check out the link:
