Do you have access to Sourcelink?  Here's a pointer to the LEF/DEF Language Reference that describes what a GCELL i:

    http://sourcelink.cadence.com/docs/files/Release_Info/Docs/lefdefref/lefdefref5.7/DEFSyntax.html#960924

Yes, GCELL is related to routing, but typically users aren't supposed to have to alter it:

"Typically, the GCELLGRID is automatically generated by a particular router, and is not manually created by the designer."

I've never had to alter the GCELL section of a DEF in my years working with Cadence tools.  Is it giving you trouble somehow?

    Hope this helps,
    Bob
