Xcelium 21.09 Installation setting and manual(?)

Hi, all. I am new to Xcelum functional verification. I installed Xcelium 21.09 and spent 1 hour searching for the binaries like xrun.

It is so weird that the major binaries are listed in tools/bin.

I cannot find an intuitive manual to set up an environment like Innovus. I searched a lot and then found the set-up instructions for Xcelium as follows.

https://support.cadence.com/apex/techpubDocViewerPage?xmlName=simoverview.xml&title=Overview%20of%20Running%20the%20Xcelium%20Simulator%20--%20Table%20of%20Contents&hash=&c_version=21.09&path=SimOverview/SimOverview21.09/SimOverviewTOC.html

I am stupid and wonder why Xcelium is so different from other products. Why is there no tutorial introducing how to set it up? And why did no one put the installation instruction in the first section in the manual?

I have to say it is so difficult to install. At first, I thought my installation was corrupted since I could not find xrun in the XCELIUM2109/bin/ folder. And I tried different versions again and again.

I just wonder why no one mentioned it in any materials to help idiots like me.

Sorry that you had a bad experience getting started. Xcelium has "always" used <install>/tools/bin since at least 20 years ago!

Normally when we engage with a new customer, we'll assign someone to help them get set up; I'm not sure why that didn't happen in your case.
Note that version 21.09 is very old now and out of support, you should use the newer 22.09 or 23.03 releases.

As for the documentation, if you had navigated through the product manuals to the installation guide, you'd have found what you needed:

    • Support Home
      • Resources
        • Product Manuals
          • Installation and Configuration Information 22.09
            • Configuring your Xcelium Environment

    ---

    Setting the Path Variable

Set the path variable so that it includes the path to the installed Xcelium executables, which are in <install_dir>/bin and <install_dir>/tools/bin.

For instance, you can set the path variable as follows:

    set path = (install_dir/bin install_dir/tools/bin $path)

The Xcelium tools can also be run/invoked using the absolute path of the executable, without setting up the $PATH environment variable. The tool internally extracts the installation directory from the absolute path used to invoke the tool and adds it internally to the $PATH environment variable. For example:

    <cds_installation_path>/tools/bin/xrun <test.v> -sv

Here, <cds_installation_path>/tools/bin is extracted and used as the installation directory. All the Xcelium executables required by sub-processes/utilities during this run are now searched at the same location.

    ---

This looks pretty clear to me, it's just a shame you missed it.

The problem is that I am a poor student. I use the license from our department using Cadence University Program (2022). I can only access Xcelium 21.09, according to the licensed material. And unfortunately, there is no guide.

I agree that the content in that section of the instruction manual is quite clear. But it took a long time to find the right manual since it is not as obvious as other tools (e.g., Innovus). Most materials I can find only talk about how to use Xcelium.

And the manual structure is like this:

    1.1. Running the Simulator

1.2. Providing Access to Simulation Objects

    1.3. Invoking the Simulator (xmsim)

1.4. Setting Up Your Design Environment

It teaches me how to run the simulator first.

I agree that it is clear that I COULD FIND this document easily. If I search on Cadence's support portal, most contents about Xcelium are about usage.

The problem is that I am a student using a license from the academic program. There is no tech support for me. And I can only use 21.09, according to the licensing material.

Sorry for duplicating this. The previous reply was marked as spam and was recovered.
