    You add IO cells to your netlist before loading into encounter. then you will get the default view with io cells arranged around the four sides of the core. Then just save the .io file as such. Open it using some text editor and make changes accordingly. Its very simple to edit it. You can change the position of the IO cell location as you wish. Now load the edited .io file and see whether your needs are met. Hope this helps , Gops

     thanks for the answer,

    but it would be better if you had given me some material regarding the .io assignment .

    ok i'll tell what my problem is:

    i am using umc library, i have synthesized my code using RTL Compiler and now have to do P & R so i am using SOC Encounter.

    after enering all the desired libraries in the Design Import window i have to add .io assignment file to get the i/o pad in my design and along with it there are also filler pads and corner pads.

    i have seen the i/o library which has many pads in it, and has some idea wat it is

    but how to wite a .io file , i am not able to get

    do i have to add in the synthesized netlist  which i got from RTL Compiler so if i have to add in it how do i write it.

    plz give me some file if you have (like some small example ,adder)

    Hi Oysters;

    I don't have a doc. regarding the same.

    According to my knowledge  .io file is not used to add an IO instance, instead it's just used to arrange it around the core.

    You can add IO cells in your design  in two ways.  you add it in synthesized nelist or you can use virtuoso schematic editor for the purpose. For the second option you need to load your netlist to virtouso and generate  a schematic.then add io cells and regenerate netlist.

    for the first option you need to modify your netlist.

    You create a new top module and add IO cells ,corner cells  under the new one.

    Then import this to encounter. Just save the IO file and edit it to re arrange the IOs.

    Hope this helps.
