How to perform dynamic power analysis using RTL compiler

 Hi there,

 to approximate power consumption at an early design stage we want to generate the most accurate power reports one can get using a netlist from RTL compiler. Is EPS the right tool for this task ? We also want to annotate the switching activity using a vcd-File?

What is the best way getting accurate power approximations at this design stage?

    Hi Marten,

    power analysis is quite a large subject. At HDL stages EPS is a non-option so you have to use RC and the HDL analysis capabilities there. General speaking HDL analysis is more limited in the determining absolute numbers and better suited to determine relative numbers.
    A big part of the challenge is determining a realistic set of vectors and, if you really want the ability to explore extensive stimulus, you will need to look at a solution such as DPA which uses emulation technology in conjunction with RC. I recommend you engage on this with your local AE. There is ample documentation in the RC power analysis user guide but I believe your local AE may be able to better advice you on your specific needs
