Capture reference designators swap

Lock2002

I have a preliminary component placement that I'm pretty far along with when an engineer decided to change all reference designators on the schematic. I'm not sure if they made other net or comp value changes before doing this. How should I go about fixing this?

Thanks

    Hi Lock.

First thing, save your existing placed board under a different name so you have a backup.

In capture use that new board name for both the input & output board.

Generate netlist with the options "Place Changed components if same"  & do not open board file.

    Load your board in Orcad/Allegro.

See if that works, believe it should.

Another way to do it is from in Orcad/Allegro. Use import logic ! to pull in your new netlist.

    All the best.

This doesn't resolve the problem. All of the parts are placed.

Well, I have a placed board and changed all the reference dez in capture and upon netlisting it did indeed update the board to the new references as described above. If I changed a footprint specific to one of the symbols that did not exist on the board "New Footprint", again netlisting worked fine and the board updated. The changed footprint is was under place component and the prior footprint was removed from the board.

Doing a import logic from within the pcb editor also updated the placed board too.

Everything works from here, not too sure what your trouble is there. What are you finding that's not working ?

I'm finding that it's ripping most of the parts off the board.  Allegro places by reference designator as far as I know. Not sure how this works for you. When you renumber in Capture are using "Tools, Annotate"? The individual that renumbered did this, but set everything to "?" first and then renumbered.

Can anyone else confirm that this works for them? I've tried it several times.

Another thing to add. We aren't using a shared directory. I took a copy from their working directory.

Hi Lock, in capture I used both tool's annotate to reset the ref-dez to ? then re annotated again. I also changed references manually and both ways worked fine. The footprints on the board got updated to the new references. Now if I changed a footprint type in the schematic to a new type then that footprint would get ripped off the existing board which is to be expected. By way of an example if C1 was a 0805 resistor and I changed C1 to a 1206 type then the 0805 for C1 would get removed from the board.

Maybe you can verify in capture that your placed board "Input Board" & "Output board" are the same and that "Place Changed Components if same is checked" under netlisting.

A very easy way to confirm things is just do a simple schematic with say 3 symbols and create a board based on those first. then go back into capture and change your input board and output board to be the same, using your newly created board as the input board.

Next either manually change the re-dez or annotate etc.. It does not matter. Upon netlisting again you should see that the references update fine without problem.

If parts are getting ripped off the board it sounds to me like that actual footprint got changed on the schematic.
