What areas of OrCAD Capture would users like to see improved?

OrCAD Capture is a powerful schematic capture solution used by many commercial and educational institutions. Its longevity and functional flexibility has made it a staple to PCB, Packaging, and FPGA design flows. As we continue to enhance the core product based on our strategic initiatives I'd like to get feedback from the users of where you feel we could provide the most value to accelerate your productivity. Is it in technology areas like library development, data management, simulation, etc... or in modernization of presentation, usability, and ecosystem?

  • Can you make the click-and-drag selection tool NOT jump to the snap grid? I want fine control of what I am selecting.

    Make it possible to shorten/lengthen multiple parallel wires/lines at once. Currently, if I select multiple wire segments and click and drag the handle on one of them, only that one wire follows the mouse. It would be nice if all selected wires are lengthened/shortened together. This is especially useful for adjusting wires coming off a connector, for example, keeping them all at the same length to maintain tidiness. 

  • Please give us the ability in the native tool to export the bill of materials to a custom Excel template. Our BOMs have our company information at the top, along with project name, project number, revision, signoffs, etc. At this time we have to generate the BOM from OrCAD and then copy and paste it into our custom template. It would save time and effort if we could export it directly to a file created from the template, along with select design parameters such as project name/number/revision, etc.

    Please give us the ability to generate a BOM with a comma-space after each reference designator (", ") rather than just a comma. If a BOM has multiple lines of designators for a given line item and we export it to Excel, Excel treats it as one long word and breaks it up in an illogical manner (see below). By adding a space between the comma and the next designator, Excel treats each designator as a word and moves it down to the next line if it does not fit on the current line. 

    Current designator field exported to Excel BOM:

    R1,R2,R3,R4,R5,R6,R7,R8,R9,R
    10,R11,R12,R13,R14,R15,R16,R
    17,R18,R19,R20

    Notice the lone "R"s at the end of the first two lines. If a comma-space separator was used, it would look more like this:

    R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8,
    R9, R10, R11, R12, R13, R14,
    R15, R16, R17, R18, R19, R20

    Much cleaner.

  • It Would be nice if we can have one scripting language for all the orcad tools either tcl in capture and allegro or skill it would also be nice to have script development in an ide hosted by capture and allegro rather like the vba environment of microsoft excel

  • I think signals can be enhanced for example if there is a lot of components connected to a net when you do the signals command it would be nice to be able to select a component on the signals dialog and be taken straight to that component not just have the net highlighted

  • I would like to see drc to be done like the drc browser in allegro so if we have waived drc we can have a comment againt it explaining why it was waived so the waive drc's can be reviewed
