Panning is not smooth; jumpy and odd acceleration.

In PCB Editor/Designer v17.4, I've already found and set designhdl_pan to reverse the default pan direction. Ok, good.

But in other programs I've used, if I middle-click and move the cursor, it's a 1:1 movement: The board or canvas moves exactly with the cursor.

In OrCAD, not only is it not 1:1, it is very jumpy. It tends to jump quite a lot, after which that panning operation is smooth. Each successive panning operation has this same initial jump. It makes panning fairly unusable, and there are no scroll bars either. What's causing this?

I finally got some video of how this jumpy motion looks. When I move the board around, I middle-click-and-hold, and smoothly move the mouse around. There is an initial jump of some distance, after which it pans around smoothly. This is consistent too - every time I start panning, it jumps abruptly at the start.

This video didn't capture the cursor, so it's somewhat harder to see, but the overall view in the upper-right shows the jumping behavior very clearly.

Would be good to know what ver of 17.4 you are using as there have been and last I checked on going graphic speed issues with 17.4.

One thing you can try is to disable the full screen cursor and see if the graphic speed improves.

On the tool bar go to setup and choose User Preferences. In the user preferences do a search for cursor. change the cursor from infinite to a cross.

Hit apply. You can leave the user preferences open and still pan around the board.

There is also an option for the panning. The default is when you press middle mouse button and move the mouse to the left the screen pans in the other direction. To change that do another search in the preferences for pan. Check the box designhdl_pan and hit apply.

Close out of the preferences and see if the graphic speed gets better.

On a large board you should notice an increase in speed doing zoom, pan etc with those settings.
