Best ways to set Design for Manufacturing rules in the PCB design flow!

Design for Manufacturing (DFM) checks is the practice of optimizing the design workflow. DFM checks are mandatory for the PCB to be fabricated without any potential manufacturing issues. When a PCB is first developed, the focus is usually on the functionality rather than the manufacturability of the board. Many issues are traditionally found in the cycle between design and sign-off to manufacturing. Performing DFM checks with the design will make the user aware of the time savings in catching these issues earlier in the cycle.

Various tools and techniques are available in the industry for this. Each company has its process in place to perform DFM checks. Any recommendations/methodologies that you would give to a new or existing user to improve the manufacturing process?

  1. After tape-out, get inputs from the fab house and then make suitable design changes.
  2. Use the DesignTrue DFM Wizard utility.
  3. Implement thorough DFM constraints check from within Allegro Constraint Manager.
  4. DFM Checker part of the Allegro Manufacturing Option.
  5. Third-party DFM checkers, for example, Valor.

    • I have been using DesignTrue DFM for about a year now with a lot of success.  In my opinion, you are better off building the configuration up from scratch than using the wizard so you understand exactly what is being done.  As we get TQs from the board house or DFM issue from our CM, we look at our DFM and DRC rules to see if we could have caught the issue by updating the rule.  If we can't find a way to automatically check for it, the issues goes into our manual checklist until we can find a way to automatically check for it.  Since we started doing this process, our TQ/DFMs have gone way down
