update layout creates a Rectangle "Board Geometry/Top_Room" that cannot be removed

This is my first time designing my PCB with Cadence tools. I placed several parts on the PCB design, then I went back to the schematic to make some changes to the connectors. When I came back to the PCB editor and selected "update layout", the editor added all the parts that were not yet placed in a rectangle region named "1". The rectangle cannot be deleted with Edit->Delete command. Can anyone give some hints on how to remove it?

Hi JC, to remove rooms please use menu: Setup > Outline > Room Outline.

To setup the board outline you should also invoke the Design Outline setup tool from the setup menu before placing any components

Hi John, thanks for the reply. I did try this approach but the software doesn't seem to recognize it as a room. I saw the rectangle was assigned a "FIXED" property automatically which I cannot figure out how to edit.

Upon syncing with the schematic, the rectangle is added together with the parts as a group called "1_QP" but disbanding the group won't remove the rectangle.

Hi Zhifeng thanks for sending this.  I have managed to delete this room. It turns out to have been assigned a "fixed private" state. We will investigate this further in the tool.

For now the fix is to check the user preference dbdoc_fixed_private .

With this setting Dbdoctor will now remove the FIXED_PRIVATE properties left behind by partitioning.  Now run DBdoctor  by going to Tools > Database Check, select all options and Check the board.

After doing this you should be able to delete this room directly. Let me know if this works!

Thank you very much. Through the method you provided, I just tested and deleted it. I don't remember why this Rectangle appeared here at that time, but at least I can delete it now. That's great!Handshake

I found that in OrCAD X PCB Presto 24.1 (OrCAD X Professional Plus), a blank PCB will generate a similar rectangle (0_QP) when importing a brand new netlist using the Update PCB function under ECO, which is somewhat similar to the current issue. By default, these rectangles have a 'locked' attribute and cannot be unlocked or deleted. I can only delete them using your method.

Another way is to delete this property by some skill commands.  In the normal command line:

    skill axlDBDeleteProp(axlDBGetShapes( "BOARD GEOMETRY/TOP_ROOM") "FIXED_PRIVATE")

    Then all properties are removed.

Next step is disband any group. After this you can delete the rectangles.
