Wall thickness of a via hole...

 Hi all,

What is the standard via hole wall thickness for micro, buried and PTH? When putting of vias for a power signal, it is an important issue to maintain the flow of sufficient current. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Regards,

Shiva.

    Shiva,

Via hole size is decided based on Aspect ratio which is the ratio of hole size to board thickness. Via hole wall thickness is determined by the plating normally 1/2 OZ or 1OZ is used based on your design application. Power boards will go for more Ounces.

for power signal via - its important to condider the current, temperature rise in PCB, plating, PCB material used. You can download the Saturn PCB design toolkit from www.saturnpcb.com  to calculate via current.

    Goodluck!!

Thanks Nagaraj. One of our HDI board fabricator, who have the minimum limit of fab of via wall is only 0.6mils for power vias which dimensioned 12x24 for a 1.6mm board. It's too less compared to the current in board. I think the wall thickness is vary with the type of PCB like HDI and normal PTH boards.

    Hi Shiva,

If your doing a class 2 board, then the hole wall thickness must be 0.8 mils absolute minimum. For class 3, it must be 1 mil absolute minimum.
