Unplaced/Placed symbol;s in PCB EDITOR

I have loaded an netlist in the PCB editor and since the symbols are not placed I cannot see any of the symbols. I know they are there since Place/Manual shows all the reference designators. Why can't I see the symbols ?

I then used Quickplace and all the symbols are located on the right side of the board. I want to be able to select certain reference designators to group the symbols. When I goto Manual Place there are now no reference designators. How do you select a group of reference designators ?

Is there anything that explains the differentces between unplaced and placed symbols ?

TIA Lenny

There is not anything different between placed and unplaced other than that.  Placed symbols are ones that have already been placed in the board, unplaced have not.

You can place symbols using filters on the right side of the placement window, or by selecting individual boxes next to the symbols in the list.

This is likely in the algroplace.pdf in the doc\algroplace directory of the installation but, "placed" means "placed on the canvas", "unplaced" means "waiting to be placed on the canvas". Initially symbols are "waiting to be placed after loading a new netlist, or an updated netlist containing additional symbols. When you used the Quickplace command, the symbols were placed around the edges of an outline, or point specified, depending upon the Quickplace options, and were no longer "waiting to be placed". (And removed from "Place>Manually") You can opt to place parts from Place>Manually, select the References of the parts to be placed and manually place them on the canvas, if you opt to use the Quickplace, you will need to move the symbols from their "quickplaced" locations to their required locations. If you select the symbols and "unplace", or "delete", them from the canvas, they will get back to the Place>Manually, "waiting to be placed", list.

Thanks for the answers. One thing  I do not understand is why can you not see the unplaced parts ? Seems like you should be able to see them in the database.

Maybe I don't understand the question, but where would you expect to see a footprint that is not placed on the board?

I would expect to be able to see the footprints outside the board outline.  It is odd to me that you cannot see any footprints after you load a netlist until the parts are placed(even if they are placed outside the outline).
