Differential Pair

Hello all..I wonder why we need a reference plane or return plane for differential pairs?? I thought Trace 1 is reference for Trace 2 and vice versa..It is obvious that we must need a return path for single ended signals but why we need for Diff pairs..Experts pls clarify me..

Regards,

Thank you Mr tltoth. I have been thinking it is a current loop. I understood your point. But I have another doubt regarding impedance of the diff pair. Impedance of a trace depends on the reference plane to my knowledge , I have been told from senior at my company..If we did not maintain the correct Primary gap of the differential pair, there will be mismatch in impedance irrespective of the reference plane. Is my doubt make any sense? if so pls clarifiy me on this..
