Placing and routing identical circuits in PCB

Santosh Vema
Santosh Vema over 6 years ago

Hello,

I'm using OrCAD PCB Designer Standard version 17.2-2016 S056.

I have few identical circuits that need to be placed and routed in a similar fashion.

Lets say I placed and routed one group of components and I want the second group of components to be placed/routed in the exact same manner.

Groups have same number of components.

Thanks,

Santosh

    It's called 'Place replicate' -

    1) Go into PLACEMENT MODE

    2) Select some components; RMB (right mouse button) and click on 'place replicate create'

    3) select any additional elements (vias, clines, etc.) you wish to replicate (see your console/session log on the screen)

    4) RMB DONE when complete

    5) Name the circuit replicate group

FYI - all components have to be place somewhere in your board file to make this work (I place them with 'Quick place')

    6) RMB; Place replicate (the other, not the create)

    7) Options tab ; set your replicate options

    8) place the circuit using a grid, an X-Y location, etc.

    Complete. There's a online tutorial I'll post.

I clicked on Placement Edit button (Setup->Application Mode->Placement Mode). When I selected few components, I don't see Place Replicate Create. I read in another forum that these options are only available in Professional version of PCB editor, I have a Standard version.

i do not have a professional version either.

so what i usually do is to export the routing and components (vias, clines, shapes, and symbols) as a sub-drawing and then import the sub-drawing back to the same file at a different location.

Thank you, I don't see sub-drawing in version 17.2, but i think its Export->Clipboard and Import->Clipboard?. Once I did that all the refdes are reset to '*', so you then change the refdes of each component?

Yes, if you do it this way you need to swap out the * designations. What I normally do is place the 'correct' component next to the one that was 'copied in'; then SWAP COMPONENT.

Again, if you do this through the 'clipboard routine' I suggest you move all the GND planes (and other planes) off the board until you get all the good circuitry in place. If you don't you play the game of the layout tool connecting clines/nets to GND (or some other plane).

    Happy Thanksgiving!
