BOM

When I try to create a BOM from the schematic, I receive this error" Error 001- Illegal Operation"
then

"USAGE:.... [-nographic]... etc" and a bunch of other stuff. What do I have to do to this schematic to extract the BOM.
note: this schematic was given to me and I believe it contains all the necessary information in it.

     May be running Export Physical on the new (copied) design before issuing bom command will do the trick if not done so already.
