Virtuoso Studio: Excellent XL – Automated Layout XL Binding from LVS Data

14 May 2026 • 2 minute read

Our new AI-powered custom design solution, Virtuoso Studio, leverages our 30 years of industry knowledge and leadership, providing innovative features, reimagined infrastructure for unrivaled productivity, and new levels of integration that stretch beyond classic design boundaries. In this blog series, learn how the best analog design tools just got better to help you keep pace with your challenging design issues.

Designs created outside Virtuoso Layout Suite XL often require additional work to achieve Layout XL compliance. Without proper binding, advanced layout, migration, and analysis capabilities cannot be fully used. svdb binding using application readiness checker

Virtuoso Studio addresses this by enabling automated Layout XL binding using LVS data, helping designs move from LVS-clean to XL-compliant.

Why Layout XL Binding Matters

Layout XL compliance is required to use advanced placement, routing, migration, and analysis features, such as Analog Place and Route (APR), Automatic Layout Migration (ALM), Electrically Aware Design (EAD), and Voltage Dependent Rules (VDR).

Prior to IC25.1, LVS binding in Virtuoso Studio was limited to flat designs. Because flat LVS does not preserve hierarchy, LVS results cannot be applied to hierarchical designs without making all hierarchies transparent. In addition, binding relies only on the instance cross‑reference file and the layout‑extracted netlist from the LVS svdb directory, and the binding itself is applied only at the top‑level cellview rather than across all sub‑cells.

Improved LVS-Based Binding Starting IC25.1

Starting with IC25.1, Virtuoso Studio uses more information from the LVS svdb directory to improve Layout XL binding results. Using this complete svdb directory data allows all cells in the design to be bound while maintaining hierarchy, addressing key limitations of earlier flat LVS‑based binding. By reusing LVS information already generated during verification and extending how svdb data is applied, Virtuoso Studio simplifies the process of restoring Layout XL binding while preserving the hierarchy.

Role of the Application Readiness Checker

In Layout MXL, Application Readiness Checker provides a single interface to help achieve good binding for designs created outside the Layout XL flow. It supports checking and updating Layout XL compliance and enables LVS‑based binding to be applied in a controlled and consistent manner, helping designs to transition from LVS‑clean to Layout XL‑compliant.
