 As PCB designs become larger and more complex, flat schematics are harder to manage. As projects grow, the number of schematic pages increases, making it more difficult to trace connectivity and increasing the risk of errors when changes are introduced. Hierarchical design solves these issues by organizing the schematic into logical functional blocks, such as power, processing, memory, and interfaces. This structure enables designers to focus on the overall system first and view circuit details only when needed.

Why Use Hierarchical Designs?

Hierarchical designs help teams manage complexity without losing design intent. Instead of navigating dozens of loosely connected schematic pages, designers work with a structured representation of the system and drill down into details only when required.

Allegro X PCB System Capture provides multiple ways to create and manage hierarchical blocks, depending on whether you are starting from an existing schematic or creating a new design.

Implementing Hierarchical Design

Allegro X PCB System Capture supports multiple hierarchical workflows, making it easy to adopt a hierarchical design approach.

Method 1: Create a Hierarchical Block from an Existing Schematic

This method is ideal when you already have a schematic and want to reuse it as a hierarchical block. To create a block from an existing schematic:

  1. Open the existing schematic.
  2. Right‑click the existing schematic in the Project Explorer and choose Generate Symbol.
    The ports in the schematic automatically become pins on the block symbol.



  3. Choose File - Import - Block(s) to place the block in another schematic.


    The block symbol is created directly from the schematic, preserving ports and connectivity—no manual cleanup required.

Method 2: Create a New Hierarchical Block

When you want to define the block structure first and then build the circuitry inside it, use this method. To create a new block:

  1. Choose File – New – Block.



  2. Specify the block name.



  3. Open the new block sheet and add your circuit.
  4. Add port symbols to define interfaces.
  5. To regenerate the block symbol, right-click the block and choose Re-generate Symbols.
  6. To place a block in a schematic page, right‑click on Block and choose Place as Schematic Block.


    This approach allows design teams to define the system structure early and refine each block incrementally, making it ideal for collaborative and evolving designs.
