Problem in simulating a circuit with spectre

Hi Palash.

Ubuntu is not a supported OS, but it's probably more the fact that you're using a 32-bit OS that is the issue. MMSIM11.1 onwards (I think) requires you to be using a 64-bit OS and will fail otherwise.

You can probably check this easily by trying to invoke the "runSimulation" script in the netlist directory as the error message suggests.

The Base release was the initial release of the software. During its life, various fixes and updates to the software occur, and these are captured as Hotfixes (sometimes known as "ISRs").

If you install a Hotfix release using InstallScape then it automatically downloads whatever components it needs from the Hotfix release, plus any components that still remain from the Base release. Often by a later hotfix not much of the Base release remains - because most things will have changed during the lifetime of a release.

You certainly do not need to install the Base release first and then apply the Hotfix to it.

Note that if you choose to install by downloading complete images rather than letting InstallScape download for you, then you may have to download the images for both the hotfix and the base release (so this is less efficient, because you download a lot of stuff that is not needed); you would start by installing the Hotfix, and then it will prompt you if it needs the image for the Base release (I haven't tried this for a while, so I can't remember whether IC615 Hotfix needs the base release at all).

I post my question here because I have the same case and problem in this post. I installed cadence IC 6.15 Base, only (without Hotfix), with MMSIM 12.10 in ubunto 12.04 (32bits). And, in the simulation of my circuit, I got the same message error :

ERROR (ADE-3036): Errors encountered during simulation. The simulator run log has not been generated. Possible cause could be an invalid command line option for the version of the simulator you are running. Choose Setup->Environment and verify that the command line options specified in the userCmdLineOption field are supported for the simulator. Alternatively, run the simulator standalone using the runSimulation file in the netlist directory to know the exact cause of the error.

When I run "runSimilation" in the netlist directory, I get this message:

cds_root: cds_root: cannot execute [Erreur de format pour exec()]
FATAL: Unable to find the Cadence software in your $PATH.

After readinf your reply, I think that the problem is in my installation (I installed the Base instead Hotfix). Please, what s the supported system (OS) for cadence virtuso?

It's not Virtuoso you're having the issue with, but MMSIM. The issue is that MMSIM11.1 and later require a 64-bit OS, and you're trying to run on a 32-bit OS. Given that no recent hardware has been 32-bit, you're either running on a very old machine, or have installed a 32-bit OS on it for some peculiar reason. There may be other issues too, but if running "spectre" from the command line (which is what runSimulation does) fails, then that's where you need to start.

Note that Ubuntu is not supported at all by any Cadence product; that's not your issue here, but it quite likely will lead to problems.
