When to Use TopMetal2

Hi,

I am using a new process that contains both TopMetal1 and TopMetal2. Unfortunately documentation is not very useful on when to use either one. Wondered if anyone had any advice on the following:

1. When to use TopMetal2
2. Which is better for Bonding

Thanks.

    Hi ChrisDG,

    You didn't mention

    1) what you are trying to do. Are you modeling transmission lines?

    2) what tool you are using. Layout? Transmissionline library? mtline?

    3) and the version of that tool. IC617? Spectre16.1?

    4) what documentation/manual (the name and version).

So, it's pretty hard to know what you are trying to do.

    best regards,
    Tawna

In addition to the things that Tawna mentioned, nobody is going to help you unless they know the technology/process that you're using - we have no idea what TopMetal1 or TopMetal2 mean; maybe somebody will recognise the names and can help. Perhaps you should contact the foundry?

    Regards,

    Andrew.

Thanks Tawna and Andrew for the replies.
I was mostly after generic advice/best practices/things_to_avoid for analog designs up to 10GHz if anyone has experience of routing/bonding/grounding in the top metal layers. It is not for anything specific. The foundry only states rules on how to avoid getting DRC errors.

I realise this is more planning/design related rather than layout tool related so might be outside the scope of this forum (in which case no worries).

    Some requested details below:

Layout XL in Cadence Virtuoso IC617
    BiCmos Process

    Thanks.

I still don't see how anyone can help you without knowing which specific technology you're using. "BiCmos Process" doesn't cut it. Unless somebody is familiar with the specifics of the process you're using, they're not going to know the benefits and disadvantages of "TopMetal1" and "TopMetal2". They're just names to me - I can't tell you anything about them or why you would choose one over the other. I suspect that is the same for everyone else in these forums unless they a) knew the actual technology you were using and b) were familiar with it. Oh and c) they're not going to break any non-disclosure agreement by revealing information here.

That's why I think you need to contact the foundry if their documentation isn't clear...

    Regards,

    Andrew.

No probs, I will check if they have any examples. Thanks for trying.

    Chris.
