TechFile: Is there a way to combine techfile, beside using incremental method?

Hi,

Is there a way to combine 2 techfile, besides using incremental techfile. I have 2 techfiles, which i use incremental method to consolidate 2 techfile into one. Example: techlibA and techLibB, and techLibB is reference to techLibA. I managed to get all infomation and layers in techlibB including info in techLibA. But if i try to retrieve infomation from techlibA, i cant get the tech info that i store in techLibB.

Is the any way i can get all techInfo, no matter i use techfile from techLibA, or techlibB?

Thanks

Hi How, As you have discovered, an Incremental tech file setup does not merge or consolidate the technology files, it provides a way to add to an existing "master" technology (or otherwise modify or override parts of it) without needing to edit it directly. To consolidate two technology files I would pick one as being the master and add the other technology file to it. This can be tricky, especially if there is overlap between the two. I have done this recently and although there was not too much overlap it was not too pleasant an experience! Good luck. Lawrence.

    Hi Lawrence,

Thanks a lot. Unfortunately, merging 2 techfile into one may not apply to my environment, where both techfile is update time by time and from different reources as well. Merging them will need more maintenance when there is any update.

     Any advice or suggestion? Thanks

    How,

What you're asking for doesn't really make sense to me. If you have an incremental tech db, which techB referencing techA, it makes no sense to expect to be able to access techB info when you're using techA - but the other way around does make sense. Why would you want to access information from the "wrong" technology file? It seems a very strange request - so I suspect there's a misunderstanding here (either my misunderstanding, or your misunderstanding as to how ITDB should work).

    Andrew.

    Hi Adrew,

Thanks. Actually i was looking a way to merge two techfile into one instead of using incremental method. But the hard part is, i still need to maintain these 2 files separately where each of the techfile may update from time by time.

    Hi How,

I'm with Andrew on this.  Even if you were not using an incremental techfile set up it does not make a lot of sense - how would you keep the files separate and yet still be able to use them as a merged combination?  Sounds like you want some kind of an "include" feature, but even then, only one file would be able to include the other; they could not include each other or there would be an infinite loop.

Just my $0.02 worth (currently about 1.22 pence), so you can take it or leave it ;-)

    Lawrence.

HAHA, ya ya. I got it. Actually i know the techfile quite well, just curious maybe there is some hidden way/function that i didn't have the chance to explore it. That's why i posted here to seek from expert opinion.

    Thanks Lawrence and Adrew :-)
