symbol to layout conversion

 Hell0,

I am using  lxGenFromSource(dbOpenCellViewByType(libName cellName "symbol" "" "r") ?layLibName newLib ?layCellName newcell ?layViewName "layout") to convert symbol into layout but I am getting the following warning

*WARNING* (LX-2031): Cannot find the specified schematic cellview. The name or database IDyou specified either does not exist or does not point to a validschematic cellview. Specify a valid schematic cellview and try again.

but I have this Symbol view in my specified cellname , What could be the problem ?

Thanks

I think that the command is looking for a schematic rather than a symbol. The symbol only contains the pins and not the internal placement and connectivity information.

     Hey,

the symbol view has schematic inside, When I open Layout XL and go to Connectivity->generate->all from source then it's working fine. Where could be the problem ?

    Hi,

I think the problem is in your understanding of the different cellviews and how they are used.  The symbol view and schematic views are different entities and have a different database type (for example the symbol cellview database type is schematicSymbol and the schematic cellview database type is schematic) and different content. The symbol view is a symbol that is used to represent a more complex circuit that is usually contained in a schematic cellview (although it could be a text cellview such as veriloga).  So the symbol and schematic represent two different views of the same cell - VLS-XL needs a connectivity reference that contains instances and connectivity as well as pins, and so the schematic view is used for this, not the symbol view.

    Best regards,

    Lawrence.

" the symbol view has schematic inside"

This should not be. The symbol is the abstraction of the schematic and should only contain the pin and parameter information (with some graphics). The components and connectivity should be in the schematic. Otherwise, many tools will not work.

First, check the viewType of the master of the symbol view. The view name can be almost anything but the viewType of a schematic symbol is "schematicSymbol". The viewType of a schematic is "schematic". If the viewType is schematic, your view has an incorrect name and you can save it as a schematic.

If your viewType is "schematicSymbol", you have to recreate the schematic in a schematic view. Open a schematic view for the cell. Copy the schematic symbol placements and the connections from the symbol and extract the connectivity (Check and Save). This should then work.

Following from what Ted said, and to answer your question, you cannot go directly from a symbol cellview to a layout cellview to my knowledge.  You could try opening the symbol and using Create -> Cellview -> From cellview to create a schematic cellview type; this will only have the pins in it - instances etc. will need to be added (otherwise your layout will only contain pins also). I'm not quite sure what you have, so look at Ted's response and mine to see if they help you.

    regards,

    Lawrence.

     Hey Ted and Lawrence,

Thanks for your replies and guiding me.

I checked the viewtype and it's a "SchematicSymbol", Now I look up the help documents to find any function to convert Schematicsymbol to Schematic and  then to the layout but I didn't find any. Can you please help met hat where Ican find functions I am looking for

    Thanks again

     Hi Farhan,

Go back and read my previous post, or at least this part:

...try opening the symbol and using Create -> Cellview -> From cellview to create a schematic cellview type; this will only have the pins in it - instances etc. will need to be added (otherwise your layout will only contain pins also).

The symbol will only contain pins (and some graphics), so you will most likely need to add instances and connect them to the pins and each other. If you are unsure about editing the schematic there is a Cell Design Tutorial in the documentation with an associated database in the installation hierarchy.

    Hope this helps,

    Lawrence.
