What is the purpose of extracting RC in ASIC design? Can we do simulation with the extracted RC values?Does the tool do any optimization based on RC extracted values?

The primary purpose of extracting parasitics is to perform static timing analysis within the system.  SoC-Encounter has built in mechanisms for parasitic extraction, delay calculation, and static timing analysis and leverages these engines to perform optimization based on RC extracted values.  SoC-Encounter also supports import/export of SPEF for interfacing with other parasitic extraction engines and other tools.

    Hi Bob,

    Thanks for the reply.

Can you give the command flow to do timing analysis based on extracted data.

Will the tool extract parasitics in the background if we do post route timing analysis

    OR

Do we need to extract the parasitics before doing timing analysis.

Yes, timeDesign will perform extraction automatically when called.

If, by chance, you have a SPEF file from an external extraction engine that you'd like to use for timing analysis in SoC-Encounter, that SPEF file could be utilized as follows:

    spefIn design.spef
    timeDesign -reportOnly

    Hi

Could you tell how to create a spef file in encounter.

    Thanks

    Himanshu

See the RC Extraction chapter in the User Guide.
