How to sort pins in a particular order?

Hi,

I have a done a floor-plan and now the pin section need to be sorted and placed.... Initially this was sorted by name. But i have a specific order in which i want them to appear... So how should i tell the tool(encounter) that i want the pins to be placed in this specific order??..

There are around 900 pins....

Thanks & Regards,

NAADHAN

I think the best way to accomplish this is through the use of pin groups ("createPinGroup"/"addPinToPinGroup") and pin guides ("createPinGuide"). They provide ways to give automatic pin assignment guidance as to how you want it to behave, and specifying the order you want the pins to be placed is supported.

Further reading on this subject is available here:

    Hope this helps,
    Bob

Thanks a lot BobD..... May be i should try this pin grouping......

I did the same by saving an io file and manually  editing that  for the specific order...then loaded the io file back...was a bit tedious :-(.....

    once again Thanks  BobD

     Naadhan,

You may also want to consider using 'editPin' for all your pin placement needs.  I use it exclusively because it ROCKS!  About the only complaint I have is that you cannot specify multiple layers.  However, it will place the pins in the exact order that you list them on the command line.  There may be some hoops to jump through if you need to span multiple layers but you can probably construct the pin lists such that you get the desired effect.

Say the "odd" layers are vertical and you want to place your 900 pins on the top of your block.  When you use edit pin, you can only specify a single layer (see below):

editPin -honorConstraint 1 -unit TRACK -fixedPin 1 -fixOverlap 1 \
-cell cell_name -pin [list the ordered lists of 900 pins] \
-spreadType CENTER -side TOP -layer 3 -spacing 2

If the block was somewhat skinny and you don't have room for all 900 pins, you may want to divide the pins between layers 3 and 5 (maybe even through 7 into the mix if there still isn't enough room).  Thus, if you needed to split the 900 out, you'd have to:

editPin -honorConstraint 1 -unit TRACK -fixedPin 1 -fixOverlap 1 \
-cell cell_name -pin [list the ordered lists of first 450 pins] \
-spreadType CENTER -side TOP -layer 3 -spacing 2

editPin -honorConstraint 1 -unit TRACK -fixedPin 1 -fixOverlap 1 \
-cell cell_name -pin [list the ordered lists of last 450 pins] \
-spreadType CENTER -side TOP -layer 5 -spacing 2

    Make sense?
    JG
