Creating Design Entry Parts

Hi @all!

Last time i asked about a script for creating a large footprint (2992 pins) - and the excel sheet worked well. Ok, i had to re-write parts of it to fit it to my needs, but it was a nice thing to start with and it helped me a lot!

Now i have another problem: I do need that large part in a library for using it in design entry in a schematic. Ok, i imported all of the pins with the spreadsheet-import. That works but i do get one big block with all 2992 pins. Is there a way to create more "blocks" for one part? The function to create multiple parts per package won't work because the pins are not the same.

Example with 12 pins: I would want to create one part, painted by three blocks with different pin counts. Pins 1-6 are digital pins - i would want to create a block for those pins. And a seperate block for pins 7-10 (analoge pins), and a third one for 11 and 12 - the power pins. I hope you understand what i mean...

When i start creating a symbol there is a box on the screen (dotted line) with will be the outline of the new part. All of the pins i would add, would be somewhere on this box. But i can't create more than that one box...

You need to make "Slots" which is the different split parts. There is a Functions/Slots button under the Packages which allow you to add extra slots S1, S2, S3 etc. Once there you can allocate pins to the different slots using the Distribute pins command.

There is a tutorial under c:\cadence\spb_16.5\doc\pdv_tut\pdv_tut.pdf. Page 52 onwards goes through creating a split part.

    Hi Steve!

Thanks for the answer! I've been reading manuals but i did not know the keywords. I allready found out about the "split parts" but the "slots" were the missing link. So again you helped a lot!

Ok, little problem here: the tutorial expects librarian xl license - but i guess i don't have it. At least it's not shown in the Product choices dialog box...

Yes the tutorials do use / show some XL functionality but this is normally the ability to see footprints and symbols graphically. (There are other differences as well). You should still be able to follow the tutorial and create the symbol you need. To view the symbol select it with the LMB then Tools - Design Entry HDL. For the footprint select it and Tools - PCB Editor.

    Hi Steve!

Thank you for all your help so far. I've been busy and i created a symbol like the one i needed. But... ok, you told me before but i haven't seen it by then: it's for design entry hdl and the export for using that library in cis functions only with the pcb librarian expert - which i don't have. is there a way to export the symbol or to create a multi slot part for cis?
