Virtuoso Studio: Excellent XL – How to Keep Layout XL Up to Date with Ease

8 Jun 2026 • 4 minute read

Our new AI-powered custom design solution, Virtuoso Studio, leverages our 30 years of industry knowledge and leadership, providing innovative features, reimagined infrastructure for unrivaled productivity, and new levels of integration that stretch beyond classic design boundaries. In this blog series, learn how the best analog design tools just got better to help you keep pace with your challenging design issues.

As layouts evolve, keeping Layout XL compliance intact can become challenging. Instances may be added, modified, or edited across the hierarchy, and binding status can change over time. Without clear visibility, identifying what is still aligned and what needs attention can become difficult.

Layout XL addresses this challenge with on‑canvas binding highlights, giving designers immediate visual insight into binding status directly where they work—in the layout and schematic canvases.

Instant Visibility into Binding Status

On canvas binding highlights use color-based visual cues to show the binding state of instances and dummies. Instead of relying on reports, binding information is available directly in the canvas, making it easier to understand the design's current state at a glance.

Different colors distinguish Bound, Unbound, and Ignored instances and dummies. This visual differentiation helps designers quickly identify areas that may require review, without interrupting normal layout workflows. To display binding information in the canvas, in the layout window, either click the Highlight   icon on the Layout XL toolbar or choose the Connectivity – Bind – Add menu command.

Consistent Insight Across Layout and Schematic

Binding highlights are shown simultaneously in both the layout and schematic canvases, providing consistent visibility across views.

In the layout canvas, instances and dummies are visually overlaid with colors based on their binding status.

In the schematic canvas, devices are highlighted using colored bounding boxes, including clear identification of partially bound instances.

This parallel view helps correlate layout and schematic intent and reduces ambiguity when reviewing binding state. The binding color map added as a legend in both canvases provides continuous visual guidance. You can use the checkboxes in the color map to control whether binding states are shown or hidden.

Acting on What You See

When binding inconsistencies are identified, the Connectivity – Bind menu commands let you directly update the design while reviewing the highlighted binding. These commands are designed to work in both pre‑selection and post‑selection modes.

  • Add - Highlights the unbound devices in the layout and schematic canvases and lets you select the schematic instances or terminals to bind to the layout instance or terminal.
  • Remove - Highlights the bound devices in the layout and schematic canvases and lets you select the instances or terminals in the schematic to unbind from the layout.
  • Swap - Lets you select bound layout or schematic instances or terminals to swap the bindings. You should select the same type of objects to swap. For example, you cannot swap the bindings of a terminal with an instance.

Designed for Hierarchical and In‑Context Editing

On‑canvas binding highlights remain effective even in complex editing scenarios. Highlights are visible:

  • Across multiple cellviews
  • Inside transparent instances
  • While working in Edit‑in‑Place mode

This ensures that binding status remains visible even when navigating hierarchy or modifying designs in context, supporting better awareness as designs grow in complexity.

Focused, Controllable Visual Feedback

Each canvas provides an info balloon that explains the meaning of the highlight colors and allows designers to control the visibility of highlights. These controls are local to each canvas, ensuring flexibility when reviewing layout and schematic views independently.

The result is focused visual feedback that supports review and awareness, without cluttering the design environment.

Keeping Layout XL Current with Confidence

By making binding status directly visible in the canvas, on‑canvas binding highlights help designers stay aware of Layout XL compliance status as designs change. Instead of discovering binding issues late, designers can spot changes early and respond quickly.

This visual, always‑available feedback makes it easier to keep Layout XL up-to-date with minimal disruption, supporting cleaner designs and smoother downstream workflows.
