System Analysis Knowledge Bytes: Computational Fluid Dynamics Roundup – July 2021

29 Jul 2021 • 5 minute read

computational fluid dynamics news

The System Analysis Knowledge Bytes blog series explores the capabilities and potential of the System Analysis tools offered by Cadence®. In addition to providing insight into the useful features and enhancements in this area, this series aims to broadcast the views of different bloggers and experts, who share their knowledge and experience on all things related to System Analysis.

2021 has been a very exciting year here at Cadence and it is already difficult to pick out the top highlights. That said, the acquisitions of NUMECA and Pointwise have really caught peoples’ imaginations both inside and outside of the organization. In bringing those vastly experienced and highly technical teams on board, Cadence has significantly broadened its system analysis portfolio, particularly in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

With so much happening on the CFD front, it can be hard to keep up to date with the CFD news, events, and posts on social media. That’s precisely why we have come up with a Computational Fluid Dynamics Roundup series, which will give you a monthly roundup of the top news and blogs in Cadence CFD.

So, let’s get into it!

Webinars

For all CFD enthusiasts there were some great opportunities to learn about CFD through a series of webinars in June. Here is the complete list of webinars in case you want to see the recordings:

  • VALIDATION OF CFD RESULTS ON A POINTWISE® MESH FOR THE POTSDAM MARINE PROPELLER CASE on June 15

Learn about validation of CFD results from the TCFD flow solver on a Pointwise mesh for the Potsdam Propeller Test Case (PPTC), a marine propulsor that was extensively measured by SVA Potsdam.
  •
  • HIGHER PERFORMANCE AND LONGER LIFE FOR TURBOMACHINERY THROUGH RETROFITTING OPTIMIZATION on June 22

Learn how to extend the life of turbomachinery using CFD simulation in this webinar.
  •
  • BOOST YOUR PRODUCTIVITY WITH THE LATEST VERSION OF OMNISTM on June 23

Discover a new particle solver, surface-to-volume meshing and more than 100+ new capabilities to boost your productivity in this webinar about Omnis version 5.1.
  • FAST AND RELIABLE CFD SIMULATION OF A PLATE COUNTERFLOW HEAT EXCHANGER on June 24

Learn how Cadence's Omnis helps in the development of heat exchangers with fast and reliable results.

Product Releases

I am sure after checking out those informative webinars, you would want to know more about our latest CFD offerings. Here's a list of our CFD product releases in June:

  • Pointwise Version 18.4 R4

The Pointwise Version 18.4 is a bug fix release that has feature updates related to Glyph scripting for surface meshes. To know more about this release, visit our blog, Pointwise V18.4 R4 Now Available for Download and Production Use.

You can also download the V18.4 R4 version, the related tutorial workbook files, and the Glyph scripting documentation from www.pointwise.com/downloads.

  • Omnis Version 5.1

The newest version of the Omnis simulation environment has brought a new discrete particle solver, a surface-to-volume mesh module, and more than 100 other new features that will simplify your workflows, boost your productivity, and extend the scope of your simulations. To learn about these new features check out our blog New Release - Omnis Version 5.1 Is Out Now!

Blogs

While these new advances, usability enhancements, and events kept us busy, we tried to keep you updated on all things CFD through our blog posts. Here's a complete list of the CFD blogs that we published in June:

  • This Week in CFD

John Chawner has been regular with his weekly CFD posts through his blog series, This Week in CFD. You can get a week-by-week summary of the CFD news and events covered by John by clicking the links below:

    • This Week in CFD (June 25)
    • This Week in CFD (June 18)
    • This Week in CFD (June 7)
  • Overcoming Geometry Model Challenges for CFD Mesh Generation

In this blog, Cadence's Nick Wyman talks about the challenges of preparing the geometry models for CFD mesh generation and gives you tips on overcoming these challenges. He has also linked some interesting articles and whitepapers on this topic.

Trainings

You now have an opportunity to receive our Pointwise Meshing Foundations course for free. All you have to do is to sign up for a trial at https://info.pointwise.com/pointwise-trial. If you qualify for the free course, you will get a chance to work with our engineers and learn from the experts on how to leverage Pointwise to improve your CFD process.

We will end this blog with a quote from John Chawner "Not since the early stages of my career when I was involved in the ground-up development of the Gridgen meshing software have I seen as much ‘green field’ potential as I see in the Cadence CFD team including both NUMECA and Pointwise. I look forward to seeing what we accomplish together in the coming months and years."

So, whether you are a new or advanced CFD user, I am sure there was something interesting for you in our July roundup. We will be back with CFD roundup posts every month. So, stay tuned!
